Profile
Michael Toy is a Research Scientist with the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Toy began his career as a mechanical engineer in petroleum refining for Chevron Corporation, having received a B.S. at Boston University and an M.S.E. at the University of Michigan. As a licensed pilot, he has had a lifelong interest in weather, which eventually led him to studies in the Atmospheric Science Department at Colorado State University, where he earned his PhD in 2008. His work focused on the development of a non-hydrostatic dynamical core for atmospheric modeling. He continued dynamical core development as a postdoctoral fellow and project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). As a research scientist at Colorado State University he performed modeling studies to determine the impact of sea-surface temperature gradients on air-sea interactions and the strength of heavy monsoon rainfall events over the South China Sea and coastal Taiwan. Dr. Toy has been with CIRES for the last three years as a developer of physics parameterizations for the RAP/HRRR and FV3GFS numerical weather prediction models developed at NOAA’s Global Systems Laboratory.
