Dr. Man ZhangNOAA GSL and CIRES research scientist Dr. Man Zhang was recently awarded the Development Testbed Center’s Performance Recognition for Outstanding DTC achievements (PROUD) Award. The Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) is a distributed facility where the Numerical Weather Prediction community can test and evaluate new models and techniques for use in research and operations. This new quarterly award celebrates the achievements of scientists and engineers.

Dr. Zhang contributes to DTC projects that span both science-focused testing and evaluation, and software support for the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP). She assumed leadership of DTC UniPhy and Physics for Operations activities and was a member of the DTC retreat committee, an organizer of the CU/CIRES Rendezvous, and was promoted to CU/CIRES supervisor.

In addition to her technical work, Dr. Zhang is noted for her role as a mentor. In the summer of 2022, she advised a sophomore physics student at CU Denver, Jessica Paredes Saltijeral. The project compared model forecasts with satellite observations as part of testing for the Global Forecast System and Global Ensemble forecast system. Dr. Zhang worked to make the best of online tools to foster a close working relationship despite being limited to virtual interactions during COVID-19 restrictions. Jessica presented the results at a mini conference organized by CU/CIRES. The team also prepared an abstract that was accepted for the AMS Student Conference in Denver, CO in 2023.

Dr. Zhang’s mentorship made a profound difference, and her work champions progress in both numerical modeling and predictions, as well as helping support the next generation of scientists. Dr. Zhang has worked with NOAA since 2013, with research interests in numerical weather prediction, high impact modeling, and advanced data assimilation technology.
