The future of impact-based decision support for weather hazards is being developed by GSL and the NWS.

GSL and the NWS released an upgraded decision support tool, DESI 2.0, on October 28, 2022. The Dynamic Ensemble-based Scenarios for Impact-based Decision Support Services, known as DESI, is a prototype application to slice, dice, and visualize meteorological ensemble data. DESI was created for the NWS to calculate customized scenarios, statistics, thresholds, and timing information, because each forecaster and partner has unique needs. DESI is built using the most advanced web and storage technologies - including WebGL, D3, and Zarr - to give end users the best experience possible. During development, DESI has been split into two versions - A NWS and a GSL version. Evaluation of these prototypes will be performed by select offices to explore the value of each version and to ensure future iterations will become increasingly better in providing IDSS.

The GSL DESI prototype focuses on bleeding-edge visualizations, statistics, ensembles, and techniques to interrogate data. Currently, NCAR and GSL are working together to derive, display, and verify new experimental guidance that visually depicts the timing and timing uncertainty of several parameters for fire weather forecasting and IDSS. GSL DESI derives this information from the HREF but plans on incorporating additional datasets (including the RRFS) soon.
