GSL has named Dr. Curtis Alexander as GSL Deputy Director

GSL proudly announces Dr. Curtis Alexander as GSL Deputy Director. Dr. Alexander received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Pennsylvania State University (1999) and the University of Oklahoma (2002, 2010), respectively. He joined GSL in 2009 as a University of Colorado Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences researcher, and became a federal employee in 2016. Dr. Alexander became a division chief for GSL’s Assimilation and Verification Innovation Division in 2017.

"Dr. Alexander is a uniquely gifted scientist and researcher who has distinguished himself through his academic and professional career," said Jennifer Mahoney, GSL Director. "His respectful and collaborative leadership style brings out the best in his staff and colleagues."

Dr. Alexander's excellence and leadership in scientific discovery, numerical weather prediction, and world-class computational design and management have accelerated the development and implementation of real-time weather prediction for thunderstorms and other hazardous weather phenomena. He has helped transition multiple versions of the Rapid Refresh (RAP) and High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) from research to operations at NWS/NCEP between 2014 and 2020. He is also a co-lead on the Unified Forecast System Short-Range Weather/Convection Allowing Model Application Team.

In 2018, Dr. Alexander was honored with the American Meteorological Society’s Weather Analysis and Forecasting Committee Early Career Award for his significant contributions to the weather forecasting enterprise and his future as a science leader in the community. In 2020, he was honored with the NOAA Silver Sherman Award for “leadership and exceptional cross Line Office collaboration in development, improvement, and operational implementation of NOAA convection-allowing weather models and nowcasting capabilities.” In 2020 he was awarded OAR Employee of the Year for Leadership.
