Stan Benjamin receives a LifeTime Excellence Award from the Energy Systems Integration Group

GSL/CIRES scientist Stan Benjamin received a LifeTime Excellence Award from the Energy Systems Integration Group at a ceremony in June. Benjamin was honored for “sustained contributions to atmospheric modeling and weather prediction for improved forecasting of renewable energy.” The Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) is a nonprofit organization that marshals the expertise of the electricity industry’s technical community to support grid transformation and energy systems integration.

ESIG awards recognize energy professionals worldwide for their contributions and accomplishments toward the planning and operation of energy systems across multiple pathways and geographical scales in reliable, economical, and sustainable ways.
For more than 32 years, Benjamin’s scientific expertise in representing earth-system processes in modeling systems, development of efficient data assimilation methods and using new observations to initialize these models, and advanced verification techniques have resulted in state-of-the-art storm-scale forecast models that are used by a range of stakeholders ranging from severe weather, aviation, hydrology, and energy.

“It is satisfying to work with weather prediction users, learn their problems, learn more about the earth system through them, and then find better answers for them,” says Benjamin.

GSL, CIRES, NCEP/NWS, NCAR, and OAR colleagues were all instrumental in developing the NOAA HRRR forecast model/assimilation system used widely in the energy industry for wind/solar prediction.
